More than 60 million Americans in 18 states were under winter weather alerts on Sunday (January 5) before a record-breaking snowfall hit the Midwest and moved east through Monday (January 6) morning.
More than 1,400 flights within, into or out of the U.S. have been canceled and more than 1,300 within, into or out of the U.S. have been delayed as of Monday morning, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.com. Six states were reported to be dealing with more than 10,000 power outages including more than 106,000 in Virginia, more than 95,000 in Kentucky, more than 46,000 in West Virginia, more than 38,000 in Illinois, more than 33,000 in Missouri and more than 10,000 in Texas, according to PowerOutage.us.
The storm of snow and ice was reported to be moving into the Appalachians and the mid-Atlantic with school closings in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. ahead of the storms. Snowfall was already reported to have topped 1 foot in several Midwestern cities, including Chapman and Topeka, Kansas, which was reported to have gotten 18 and 14 inches, respectively.
Cincinnati was reported to have gotten 5 inches of snow on Sunday (January 5), which set a new single-day record for the city.
