Trump Breaks Silence On Unsealed Evidence Dump In 2020 Election Case

Former President Donald Trump claims he “did nothing wrong” after a 165-page filing by special counsel Jack Smith was unsealed in the 2020 election subversion case against him Wednesday (October 2), just over one month prior to the 2024 election.

“FOR 60 DAYS PRIOR TO AN ELECTION, THE DEPARTMENT OF INJUSTICE IS SUPPOSED TO DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT WOULD TAINT OR INTERFERE WITH A CASE,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account. “THEY DISOBEYED THEIR OWN RULE IN FAVOR OF COMPLETE AND TOTAL ELECTION INTERFERENCE. I DID NOTHING WRONG, THEY DID! THE CASE IS A SCAM, JUST LIKE ALL OF THE OTHERS, INCLUDING THE DOCUMENTS CASE, WHICH WAS DISMISSED!

Trump also referred to the filing as “pure election interference” during an interview with NewsNation‘s Ali Bradley on Wednesday.

“This was a weaponization of the government … and released 30 days before the election,” Trump claimed. “My poll numbers have gone up instead of down. It is pure election interference.”

The filing, which was a response to the Supreme Court’s ruling that granted broad immunity on former presidents for official acts as they take in office earlier this year, asserted that Trump acted as a private candidate for office and not as president of the United States when he attempted to overturn the 2020 election as he knew that he was spreading misinformation, despite not believing his own falsehoods, in an effort to stay in power, Smith’s team argued. The team said that Trump was scrolling through Twitter when U.S. Capitol officers were brutally assaulted by his supporters on January 6, 2021, according to an analysis by an FBI expert, whose testimony would be included in a future trial.

“The phone’s activity logs show that the defendant was using his phone, and in particular, using the Twitter application, consistently throughout the day after he returned from the Ellipse speech,” Smith’s team wrote via NBC News.
