Flash Poll Shows Who Voters Think Won Vance-Walz Debate

Voters who watched the vice presidential debate between Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz Tuesday (October 1) night said it was an almost even match with Vance getting the slight edge, according to a CBS News/YouGov flash poll.

Vance had the support of an estimated 42% of respondents, while 41% believed Walz was the winner and 17% said it was a tie. Additionally, 88% of respondents said the tone of the debate was “generally positive,” while 12% said it was “generally negative.”

Most respondents also believed both Walz and Vance were more reasonable than extreme and prepared to take over as president if necessary. The two candidates also varied on support based on several key topics with Walz having the advantage while discussing abortion and healthcare, Vance having an edge on the economy and immigration and both tied at 50% on the conflict in the Middle East.

Walz entered the debate viewed as favorable by 52%, which was increased to 60% after its conclusion. Vance was viewed as favorable by 40% prior to the debate and 49% after its conclusion.

The CBS News/YouGov survey was based on interviews with 1,630 respondents reported to be likely voters who were interviewed between September 27-30 and again immediately after the debate Tuesday night.
