A New York man is facing numerous charges for allegedly stealing a police car during a drunk driving arrest. The New York State Police said that 37-year-old John Gibson crashed his car on the Southern State Parkway in the town of Babylon. When officers arrived, they gave Gibson a field sobriety test, which he failed.
He was then handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. While officers continued their investigation of the crash, Gibson managed to slip his handcuffs to the front, climbed into the front seat of the patrol car, and sped away from the scene.
State Troopers and officers with the Suffolk County Police located the stolen car about three miles away. They found Gibson in a nearby cemetery and took him into custody.
Gibson has been charged with felony counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and first-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of third-degree escape, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, and driving while intoxicated.
