The incident occurred amid ongoing debates about transgender athletes in the WNBA. Freedom, who recently declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft claiming to be transgender, attended the game wearing a shirt that read “WOMAN noun adult human female.”
During the third quarter, Cloud approached Freedom after scoring, leading to a heated exchange. Security and Sky players intervened, escorting Freedom from the arena. In a post on X, Freedom stated, “I just got kicked out of a WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!”
The controversy follows comments by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham, who spoke against transgender athletes in the WNBA. This has sparked a broader debate, drawing in figures like Freedom and former NBA player Royce White, who also declared for the WNBA draft.
The WNBA has not clarified its stance on transgender athletes, but Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has indicated that the issue will be discussed by a task force. Despite the off-court drama, Indiana Fever secured a 113-90 victory over Chicago Sky, eliminating them from playoff contention.
