The tariffs, which took effect at midnight, target a wide range of Canadian goods, including cars, trucks, and auto parts. Trump accused Canada of imposing “ridiculously high tariffs” on American farmers, which he claims have negatively impacted the U.S. agricultural sector. In his post, Trump stated, “Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the tariffs by announcing that Canada would retaliate with equivalent tariffs on U.S. goods, starting September 8. Carney criticized the U.S. demands as “uneconomic” and “unfair,” and described the situation as a “miscalculation” by the Trump administration. He emphasized that Canada would not accept a deal that undermines its interests.
The breakdown in negotiations marks a dramatic shift from earlier optimism. Last week, both sides appeared close to reaching an agreement, with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc engaged in extensive talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. However, last-minute changes to the U.S. terms led to the suspension of negotiations.
The tariffs are expected to affect approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. imports from Canada, impacting industries such as steel, dairy, and electronics. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has warned that these tariffs could harm both economies and disrupt supply chains.
As the trade dispute escalates, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has expressed concern about the potential impact on the North American trade pact and the millions of American jobs that depend on it. The new tariffs were imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a rarely used provision that allows the president to apply tariffs of up to 50% on foreign trade partners deemed to be discriminating against U.S. commerce.
