A recent report from Feeding America reveals that food insecurity among children in Orange County has increased significantly, with about one in six kids affected in 2024.
This marks a 27% rise from the previous year, raising concerns among experts and advocates who fear the situation could worsen.
According to the report, the rise in food insecurity is attributed to several factors, including reduced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, persistent inflation, and stagnant wages. LaVal Brewer, president and CEO of South County Outreach, highlighted these issues, stating, “With the SNAP benefits being reduced and the persistent inflation, particularly food inflation and energy inflation, and the lack of wages keeping up, something’s got to give.”
The study, known as Map the Meal Gap, used data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics to estimate food insecurity levels across the country. It found that inflation, employment hardships, and reduced government support are key drivers of the increasing rates of food insecurity.
Despite positive macroeconomic trends, such as a strong job market and wage growth, the number of people seeking food assistance has continued to rise. The Capital Area Food Bank reported distributing food for 64 million meals last year, more than double its pre-pandemic levels.
Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America, emphasized the urgency of addressing food insecurity, stating, “Hunger in the U.S. can feel confusing to people, considering this is the wealthiest nation on the planet, yet hunger is here.” She urged for stronger measures and community collaboration to tackle the issue.
With the 2024 Food Security Report being the last of its kind from the USDA, Babineaux-Fontenot sees this as an opportunity to reimagine solutions to end hunger in the U.S. The report underscores the need for policies that provide pathways to self-sufficiency and ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
