Summer is winding down for thousands of students in Orange County.
The first to welcome back students were the Anaheim Elementary School District and Cypress School District, which resumed classes on Thursday. The Anaheim Elementary School District, the largest elementary-only district in the state, saw nearly 14,000 students return to its 23 campuses. At Betsy Ross Elementary School, students were greeted with enthusiasm, featuring big signs and balloon backdrops for memorable first-day photos.
Meanwhile, other districts in Orange County, including Savanna, Fullerton, Fullerton Joint Union, Santa Ana Unified, and Garden Grove Unified, will start their school year on Monday. According to the Orange County Department of Education, schools will continue to open throughout August and into early September.
In Los Angeles, students in the Los Angeles Unified School District will return to school later this month on Monday, August 24. This staggered start is part of the varied calendar schedules that districts across California follow, ensuring at least 180 instructional days per year.
The new school year comes amid ongoing efforts to adapt to changing enrollment patterns and new state investments aimed at enhancing public education. With California’s 2026–27 state budget providing a record $128.1 billion for TK–12 schools and community colleges, districts are focusing on long-term financial planning and student success.
