Beachgoers at La Jolla Cove in San Diego experienced a startling encounter when two large sea lions emerged from the ocean and chased tourists off the beach.
The incident, captured in social media videos, shows the sea lions charging toward a crowd of visitors, who quickly scattered.
One woman visiting from Riverside County, began recording after noticing a woman attempting to take a close-up photo of a sleeping sea lion. The sea lion awoke and began chasing the woman, leading to the chaotic scene. The animals eventually returned to the water, and no injuries were reported.
SeaWorld San Diego spokespersons and experts, including Robyn Davidoff of the Sierra Club Seal Society, explained that the sea lions were likely engaging in territorial behavior related to mating season, not intentionally chasing people. FOX 5 San Diego and NBC San Diego reported that the public is advised to maintain a safe distance from the animals, especially during mating season, when they are more active.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about human interaction with wildlife at La Jolla Cove. Despite posted warnings, some visitors continue to approach the sea lions too closely. The San Diego City Council has implemented seasonal closures at nearby Point La Jolla to protect the animals during their pupping season, which runs from May through October.
Local authorities and wildlife experts urge beachgoers to respect the natural habitat of sea lions and maintain a safe distance to avoid potential harm. New signs will be posted around the area to remind visitors of these guidelines.
