The United States is conducting fresh military strikes against Iran as of today (Wednesday, July 8), following orders from President Donald Trump. According to a statement from U.S. Central Command, these strikes aim to further weaken Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation comes after Iran attacked three commercial vessels in the strategic waterway earlier this week.
The U.S. military operation began last night, targeting Iranian missile, drone, and port facilities. A U.S. official confirmed that the strikes included air defense systems, coastal surveillance systems, and anti-ship missile sites. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre has since raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to “severe.”
President Trump, speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, warned of additional strikes if Iran continues its aggressive actions. He described the recent ceasefire with Iran as “over” and accused Iranian leaders of bad faith negotiations. Trump stated, “As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time.”
The U.S. military’s response follows Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping, which have reignited tensions in the region. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has retaliated by targeting U.S. military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait, raising concerns about a broader conflict. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported the U.S. strikes, calling them “absolutely necessary” in response to Iran’s ceasefire violations.
As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful, with fears that the conflict could escalate further. The U.S. has also revoked oil sanctions waivers previously granted to Iran, adding economic pressure to the military response.
