LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Group play ended in a shocking loss for the United States, but `futbol’ fans in the Los Angeles area Friday can still enjoy various watch World Cup parties Friday, including one at Union Station — where thousands were on hand Thursday night to see the boys in red, white and blue lose 3-2 to Turkey.
Despite Thursday’s loss at SoFi Stadium — Los Angeles Stadium for World Cup purposes — the U.S. side is still headed to the knockout phase thanks to a 2-1 record in the group stage of the tournament. They will open single-elimination play against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
The early phase drama continues Friday, with qualification on the line for some teams.
In addition to Friday’s free watch party at Union Station in downtown L.A., which begins at noon with Norway versus France, others will take place at Wilmington Recreation Center, Echo Park and Sheldon-Arleta Park.
The opening game Friday will be followed by matches pitting Senegal and Iraq, Uruguay and Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, Egypt and Iran, and New Zealand and Belgium.
The Senegal-Iraq match will also be shown at the Taper Auditorium at Central Library downtown.
Officials said even without securing a free ticket to the Fan Zone at Union Station, there is plenty of room outside the rail hub and along nearby Olvera Street, although some traffic disruption was expected with road and freeway ramp closures in effect.
Fans were urged to leave their vehicles at home and take mass transit where possible.
