If you’re headed to the theater this weekend, you’ve got some great options. From superheroes and relationship comedy to high fashion and heartfelt drama, this week’s new releases offer something for just about every movie fan.
Supergirl brings a fresh take to the DC Universe
The newest chapter in DC’s rebooted universe introduces audiences to a very different Kara Zor-El. Instead of the bright-eyed superhero we’ve seen in previous adaptations, this Supergirl is tougher, more complicated, and still carrying the trauma of Krypton’s destruction.
Starring Milly Alcock and written by Ana Nogueira, the film follows Kara on an intergalactic adventure that blends action, humor and surprisingly emotional storytelling. Along for the ride is Krypto the Superdog, who nearly steals every scene he’s in.
As someone who’s covered superhero movies for years, I always appreciate when filmmakers let these iconic characters be a little messy before they become heroes. It makes them feel much more human, even if they’re technically aliens.
I’ll also have an exclusive interview with Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira this Sunday at noon on KFI Live, where we’ll talk about bringing this new version of Kara to the big screen and what fans can expect from the future of DC.
Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde test relationships in The Invite
We’ve all survived an awkward dinner party. The Invite asks one simple question: What if it got much, much worse?
Directed by and starring Olivia Wilde alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, the comedy follows two couples whose evening takes an unexpected turn after one provocative suggestion changes everything. Based on the acclaimed Spanish film The People Upstairs, the movie mixes sharp comedy with honest conversations about love, marriage and modern relationships.
It looks like the kind of film that’ll have audiences laughing one minute and nervously looking at their spouse the next. Consider it a date night movie with a conversation starter built in afterward.
Angelina Jolie returns in Couture
Angelina Jolie stars in Couture, an intimate drama set against the glamorous backdrop of Paris Fashion Week. The film follows an American filmmaker navigating career challenges, complicated relationships and a life-changing health diagnosis while immersed in the world of haute couture.
While the stunning fashion provides plenty of visual spectacle, this isn’t simply a movie about beautiful clothes. At its heart, Couture is a story about resilience, reinvention and discovering beauty during life’s most difficult moments.
Jolie has always excelled in emotionally layered roles, and this looks like another performance that reminds audiences why she’s one of Hollywood’s most compelling actresses.
What should you see?
If you’re looking for blockbuster entertainment, Supergirl delivers plenty of action while giving audiences a new heroine to root for.
If you’re in the mood for smart comedy, The Invite serves up laughs with enough relationship drama to keep everyone talking on the drive home.
And if you’d rather settle into a thoughtful, character-driven drama, Couture offers an emotional story wrapped in the elegance of the fashion world.
No matter which film you choose, it’s shaping up to be a fun weekend at the movies. Don’t miss my entertainment report every Friday on Gary and Shannon, only on KFI AM 640!
