The shooting of a family dog by a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer in Canoga Park has sparked controversy and calls for accountability.
Earlier this month, LAPD officers responded to a call about a woman screaming, which turned out to be Marie Marseille celebrating a New York Knicks game. During the visit, her dog, Jameson, a 2-year-old golden Saint Bernadoodle, was shot by an officer.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Marseille’s attorney, Brett Greenfield, demands the officer’s termination and an apology from the LAPD. Greenfield argues the shooting was unjustified, stating, “He escalated it himself. He had his gun drawn.” The LAPD claims the dog charged at the officers, prompting the shooting.
The incident has led to public outcry, with a growing memorial for Jameson at the apartment complex. TMZ reports that the family plans to sue if the LAPD does not acknowledge wrongdoing. The family has raised nearly $200,000 on GoFundMe to support a nonprofit in Jameson’s memory.
Body camera footage released by the LAPD shows the tense encounter. However, Free Press Journal highlights questions about the officers’ actions and whether less-lethal options were considered.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Karen Bass have promised thorough investigations. The family continues to seek justice, with Greenfield stating, “Justice means that this officer no longer serves as officer.”
