Thousands Sign Petition To Halt Big Bear Fireworks For Eagles

A petition urging Big Bear city leaders to cancel the upcoming Fourth of July fireworks show has gained significant traction, with over 13,000 signatures.

The petition, titled “Protect Big Bear’s Bald Eagles & Eaglets from July 4th Fireworks Disturbance,” aims to safeguard local bald eagle family Jackie and Shadow and their new babies, Sandy and Luna. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact of the fireworks on the young eaglets, Sandy and Luna, who are at a critical developmental stage.

The petition, available on Change.org, calls for relocating the fireworks launch site away from the bald eagle habitat or considering alternative celebrations, such as drone light shows. Last year, a similar petition collected over 40,000 signatures, but the fireworks proceeded as planned.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Big Bear tourism officials emphasize the economic importance of the event, stating that it supports local businesses and families. The fireworks barge is positioned about two miles from the eagles’ nest, and organizers are working to minimize noise.

Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization, has expressed concerns about the fireworks’ impact on the eagles. They highlight that sudden noises could startle the young birds, potentially leading to dangerous situations. The organization has been actively involved in raising awareness about the eagles, who have become internet sensations through live webcams.

Despite the concerns, Big Bear officials are proceeding with the event, citing efforts to balance community traditions with wildlife stewardship. The fireworks show is scheduled to last under 30 minutes, with measures in place to reduce the loudest booms.
