Tesla Crashes Into Texas Home, Kills Elderly Woman

An investigation is underway after a Tesla Model 3 crashed into a home in Katy, Texas, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila on Friday night (June 19). The driver, Michael Butler, reported that the vehicle was in automated driving mode at the time of the crash.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Butler’s car left the roadway, struck the residence at a high speed, and hit Avila, who was in the front room. She was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she later died. Butler was also hospitalized, but his condition remains unknown.

The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Rose Hollow Lane. Neighbors, including Bryan Diaz, witnessed the incident and described the Tesla speeding before it failed to stop and crashed into the house. Diaz said, “The kids were scared and my mom and my uncles. It’s insane what just happened, especially right in front of us.”

Authorities have confirmed that Butler showed no signs of intoxication and is cooperating with the investigation. As of now, no charges have been filed against him. The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office is working to determine what caused the car to lose control.

Next-door neighbor Cynthia Moll expressed her grief, describing Avila as a beloved grandmother and a second mother to many. The community is mourning the loss as investigators continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
