A 14-year-old boy was arrested in South Boston on Friday (June 12) in connection with an armed robbery of a children’s lemonade stand. The robbery occurred on Wednesday (June 10) afternoon near West Ninth Street, where two suspects allegedly approached 12-year-old David Byrne and his 11-year-old sister, Juliette, who were running the stand.
According to the Boston Police Department (BPD), the suspects made several passes by the stand before approaching and asking if Apple Pay was accepted. Without waiting for a response, they grabbed the cash box containing approximately $50, with one suspect allegedly displaying a firearm. The suspects then fled the scene.
The arrested teen faces multiple charges, including two counts of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court. The second suspect, believed to be around 11 years old, remains at large, and police are actively seeking information from the public to locate him.
The robbery shocked the local community, prompting support for the young victims. The Byrne siblings reopened their lemonade stand on Friday evening, with neighbors, city officials, and residents, including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, showing their support. Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn announced that a portion of the proceeds from the stand would be donated to a local group dedicated to gun violence prevention.
The police urge anyone with information about the second suspect to contact detectives at (617) 343-4742. As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant in supporting the Byrne family and advocating for safer neighborhoods.
