A series of severe storms is forecasted to hit the Midwest and Northeast starting Tuesday (June 16), affecting millions across the regions. Gusty winds and hail are expected to impact parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, with major cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit potentially in the path of the storms.
The severe weather threat is predicted to move eastward later in the week, targeting New York City, Washington, D.C., and other large East Coast cities. This comes shortly after both regions experienced destructive winds and large hail.
According to ABC News, more than 40 million people from Kansas City to Chicago are in the path of severe weather on Wednesday. The Midwest is at risk of destructive winds exceeding 70 mph, tennis ball-sized hail, and strong tornadoes. Minneapolis, Omaha, and Wichita are also under threat for severe weather.
In Illinois, a tornado recently moved through Streator, causing damage but no reported fatalities, as confirmed by FOX Weather. Emergency crews are assessing the damage, and residents are advised to avoid impacted areas.
The severe weather is expected to continue through Thursday, with the threat level rising to 3 out of 5 for parts of Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for potential tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail.
As the storms move east, cities along the I-95 corridor, including New York City and Washington, D.C., are under a severe thunderstorm watch. Residents should prepare for damaging winds, torrential downpours, and frequent lightning.
