Santa Monica Urges Public to Stop Feeding Squirrels

Santa Monica city officials are urging the public to stop feeding squirrels at Palisades Park due to a rapidly growing population and environmental concerns.

The park, known for its scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, has become home to hundreds of ground squirrels, which are native to the area but traditionally burrow into the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

The squirrel population has increased significantly, leading to concerns about erosion and ecological imbalance. According to a report by NBC Los Angeles, the squirrels’ burrowing habits are causing damage to the cliffs, potentially leading to landslides. Signs posted in the park warn visitors that feeding the squirrels disrupts the natural ecology and increases their dependence on humans for food.

The city has taken measures to address the issue by posting signs urging visitors not to feed the squirrels. However, many people continue to feed them, causing the population to swell. LAist reports that the squirrels have become more comfortable around humans, with some even approaching people for food.

Wildlife experts, like Marcia Rybak from Coast and Canyon Wildlife Rehabilitation, emphasize that the population will stabilize based on the available food supply. If people stop feeding them, the squirrels will breed only as much as the land can support. The spring season, which is the breeding period for squirrels, has further contributed to the population increase.

City officials and wildlife experts continue to urge the public to refrain from feeding the squirrels to help manage the population and protect the park’s natural environment.
