A Carnival Cruise Line passenger is being celebrated as a hero after jumping into the water to rescue an 84-year-old man who fell from a pier in Costa Maya, Mexico. The quick-thinking guest, identified as Myron, acted immediately when he saw the elderly man face down and struggling in the water.
Video footage captured Myron removing his shoes and entering the water without hesitation as other guests watched. Carnival crew members attempted to assist by throwing a rope, but Myron’s wife, Amy, said her husband realized the man was at risk of drowning and needed immediate help. She recounted that Myron lifted the man onto his shoulder, keeping him afloat until crew members could bring both of them to safety.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident, saying, “On May 19th, while Carnival Jubilee was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, an elderly guest fell into the water while returning to the ship on the pier. Our security team responded immediately, and the guest was safely recovered and transported to the ship’s medical center for care. He debarked the ship in Galveston at the end of the cruise,” according to the cruise line’s statement to Cruise Hive.
The rescued man received medical attention onboard and was able to complete his seven-night Caribbean cruise, disembarking with other passengers in Galveston, Texas. The man’s daughter later commented publicly on social media, thanking Myron for his life saving actions and sharing that her father, who cannot swim, survived thanks to the fast response.
Passengers and crew praised Myron’s bravery, with his room steward leaving a thank-you note in his stateroom and the couple receiving keepsake pins and a complimentary steak dinner. While Carnival did not formally recognize Myron’s actions in their public statement, the story spread quickly on social media, where many called for him to be officially acknowledged as a hero.
