Hinson and Turek Win Iowa Senate Primaries

In the Iowa Senate primaries held on Tuesday (June 2), Ashley Hinson and Josh Turek emerged victorious in their respective races. Hinson, a Republican congresswoman, defeated former state Senator Jim Carlin to secure the Republican nomination. Hinson was endorsed by President Trump, bolstering her campaign to succeed retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst.

On the Democratic side, state Representative Josh Turek won the primary, defeating state Senator Zach Wahls. Turek, who has served in the Iowa House since 2022, is also known for his achievements as a Paralympian in wheelchair basketball. He campaigned on issues such as reducing healthcare costs and supporting working families.

Both candidates will face off in the general election on November 3, 2026, as they vie for the open Senate seat. The race is crucial as it could influence the partisan balance in the U.S. Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-45 majority in the chamber. According to NBC News, the Iowa Senate race is rated as “Likely Republican,” indicating a competitive contest ahead.

The primary results reflect ongoing debates within both parties about the best strategies to appeal to voters in a state with a history of Republican dominance. As the general election approaches, both Hinson and Turek will aim to consolidate support and address key issues impacting Iowans.
