A tragic shooting occurred early Sunday morning at a candlelight vigil in Watts held in memory of Albertshay Russell, a mother of four allegedly slain by her boyfriend.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. at East 104th Street and Wilmington Avenue. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers arrived to find a large crowd and discovered one person deceased at the scene, while another individual was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The vigil was organized to honor 32-year-old Russell, who family members say was shot by her boyfriend on May 25 on Santa Ana Street. The couple reportedly lived with the boyfriend’s mother, who initially called 911 to report Russell’s death as a suicide. However, Russell’s family contends that wounds on her hands suggest otherwise. Russell’s sister, Antoinette Byrd, described her as “a beautiful person inside and out” on a GoFundMe page created in her honor.
The LAPD has not made any arrests in connection with the vigil shooting, and no suspect description is available. The community remains in mourning, grappling with the violence that claimed another life. Russell leaves behind four children, with family members stating that at least one child witnessed the Monday shooting.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward. The community is also rallying support for Russell’s family through the GoFundMe campaign.
