Waymo’s New Vehicle ‘The Ojai’ Hits Los Angeles Streets

Waymo has introduced its latest self-driving vehicle, “The Ojai,” in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix.

This new model, described as “an oasis on wheels,” features a sleek powder blue exterior and an elongated design, marking a shift from driver-focused to rider-focused experiences.

The Ojai offers a spacious interior with elevator-like doors, a flat floor, and customizable features like temperature and entertainment options via large LED screens. Built for accessibility, it includes features such as braille, screen-reader compatibility, and support handles. The vehicle debuts Waymo’s 6th-generation driver technology, enhancing its ability to operate in diverse conditions, including snowy environments.

Initially, select riders can experience free rides in the Ojai as Waymo gathers feedback. The company plans to expand to additional cities, including Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego, by the end of the summer. The vehicle’s design incorporates cost-effective AI technology, reducing sensor costs and improving efficiency.

Despite its innovative design, the Ojai’s manufacturing involves a partnership with Chinese company Geely, which has drawn some criticism. However, Waymo assures that the autonomous systems are added in the U.S., complying with regulations. The company aims to scale production significantly, with plans to introduce tens of thousands of units annually.
