A vehicle crashed into the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport on Friday (May 29), causing a scare but resulting in no serious injuries. The driver, a 67-year-old man, is in custody and is believed to have been experiencing a mental health crisis. According to CNN, he claimed he was there to meet Tom Cruise and save his dad.
The vehicle bypassed barriers and entered the terminal at a slow speed. Wayne County Airport Authority’s Tadarial Sturdivant noted that the driver navigated through gaps in the barriers, which are required by federal ADA standards. The driver continued through the security area before stopping, and a woman suffered a minor injury while trying to avoid the vehicle.
This incident marks the second time this year that a vehicle has crashed into a terminal at Detroit Metro Airport. In January, a similar event occurred at the McNamara Terminal. The investigation is ongoing, and charges will be considered by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, with the FBI also involved.
