OC Officials Warn Smaller Explosion Still Possible

The situation in Garden Grove, California, remains tense as officials clarify that while a catastrophic explosion is unlikely, a smaller explosion could still occur. The Orange County Fire Authority has been dealing with a compromised pressurized tank at GKN Aerospace since last Thursday (May 21), when it began releasing vapors.

According to the NBC Los Angeles, the tank contains methyl methacrylate, a volatile chemical, and a small crack discovered late Saturday may have relieved some pressure. Despite this, more than 50,000 residents remain under mandatory evacuation orders, with no clear timeline for their return.

A state of emergency is in place, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation. Additionally, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against GKN Aerospace by local residents, citing negligence and public nuisance. The USA Today reports that the White House is monitoring the situation closely.

Firefighters, along with state and federal officials, are working to cool down the tank and prevent any potential explosions. Interim Fire Chief T.J. McGovern stated that the new information about the crack might help authorities make more informed decisions. The Environmental Protection Agency has deployed air monitors around the clock to ensure no contaminants are released.

The Los Angeles Times notes that GKN Aerospace, a UK-based company, has been at the Garden Grove site since 2004. The company has faced previous safety violations, though none related to the current incident. Congressman Derek Tran has urged GKN Aerospace to take responsibility for the disruption caused to residents.

Efforts continue to resolve the crisis safely, with officials emphasizing the importance of following evacuation orders to prevent exposure to the hazardous chemical.
