Family Of San Diego Mosque Shooting Suspect Releases Statement

The family of Caleb Vasquez, one of the teens accused of killing three people at the Islamic Center of San Diego, released a statement apologizing for his alleged actions. They emphasized that his actions do not reflect their family values and attributed his radicalization to exposure to hateful rhetoric and extremist content online. The shooting, which occurred on Monday (May 18), resulted in the deaths of three individuals before the suspects, Vasquez and Cain Clark, turned their guns on themselves. Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

The Vasquez family expressed their condolences to the families of the victims, Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad, and to a landscaper who was shot at. They acknowledged their son’s struggles with his identity and mental health, noting that he was on the autism spectrum. The family had encouraged him to seek help, which he did voluntarily. They condemned the online spaces that normalize hatred and urged others with similar ideologies to seek help.

According to NBC News, authorities are investigating a document allegedly written by the suspects, which contains anti-Islamic, antisemitic, and anti-LGBTQ views. The document references the Christchurch, New Zealand shooter and promotes the white supremacist ideology of accelerationism.

The suspects’ writings, as reported by Los Angeles Times, include hate speech toward various groups and advocate for societal collapse. The teens left behind a manifesto titled “The New Crusade: Sons of Tarrant,” referencing Brenton Tarrant, the Christchurch shooter. The FBI is examining these writings as part of their investigation.

The shooting highlights the ongoing threat of extremist violence and the influence of online radicalization. Authorities continue to investigate the suspects’ digital footprints and the potential role of social media in their radicalization.
