At least 20 immigrants detained at the Desert View Annex in Adelanto, have initiated a hunger strike to protest what they describe as inhumane conditions at the facility.
The detainees, supported by the Shutdown Adelanto Coalition, are also conducting an economic boycott by refusing to purchase items from the commissary or make phone calls. They aim to draw attention to issues such as mold, unsafe drinking water, and inadequate medical care, according to KVCR News.
The Desert View Annex, operated by GEO Group Inc. under a federal contract, is one of three facilities in Adelanto. GEO Group claims its facilities comply with federal standards, offering medical care and other services. However, detainees and advocates argue that conditions remain poor, with reports of inedible food and delayed medical attention.
The hunger strike follows a report from the California attorney general’s office, which described conditions in state ICE detention centers as “cruel, inhumane, and unacceptable.” This report has prompted further scrutiny and calls for accountability, especially after recent deaths in ICE custody at Adelanto, as reported by the Daily Breeze.
The Department of Homeland Security denies the existence of a hunger strike, stating that detainees receive adequate meals and care.
