Palisades Fire Suspect Fixated on Luigi Mangione, Prosecutors Say

Disturbing details have emerged about Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of igniting the deadly Palisades Fire on January 1, 2025.

Federal prosecutors revealed that the 30-year-old was distraught over a past relationship and upset about having no New Year’s Eve plans. Rinderknecht, who worked as an Uber driver, allegedly drove erratically and ranted to passengers about being “pissed off at the world,” according to a trial memorandum.

Prosecutors also noted that Rinderknecht was fixated on Luigi Mangione, a man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Rinderknecht reportedly searched online for phrases like “free Luigi Mangione” and expressed resentment toward the wealthy, suggesting the fire was started out of “resentment of the rich,” as reported by the New York Post.

The blaze, which began as the Lachman fire, ultimately evolved into the Palisades firestorm, destroying 7,000 homes and businesses, causing $150 billion in damages, and resulting in 12 deaths. Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to federal arson charges and faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

Rinderknecht’s trial is set to begin on June 8, with prosecutors planning to call up to 50 witnesses. He remains jailed without bail due to concerns over his mental health and the distress caused to his family. The Seattle Times reports that his father testified in support of his release, denying any mental health issues.
