Person Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash on 101 Freeway in Encino

A person was killed in a chain-reaction crash early Saturday on the 101 Freeway in Encino after authorities say they were standing in traffic lanes.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the crash was reported around 1:56 a.m. on the westbound side near White Oak Avenue. Multiple vehicles were involved, and the freeway was temporarily shut down.

The California Highway Patrol says the incident began with a solo crash that left a vehicle disabled in the No. 1 lane. A second car rear-ended it, and a third vehicle then struck one of the people outside their car.

Video from the scene shows at least two individuals standing near their vehicles before the third crash occurred. One person was able to jump over the center divider to avoid being hit.

Officials say the victim has not been identified, and there were conflicting early reports about the person’s gender.

Authorities are reminding drivers that if a crash occurs, the safest place to remain is inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened, or to move to the right shoulder if possible.
