Southern Poverty Law Center Charged With Fraud By Justice Department

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a prominent civil rights organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, has been charged with fraud by the Department of Justice (DoJ). The indictment, announced on Tuesday (April 21), accuses the SPLC of secretly funneling over $3 million to extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, from 2014 to 2023.

According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the SPLC allegedly paid informants to infiltrate these groups without informing donors of the payments. The charges include wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Blanche stated, “The SPLC was not dismantling the groups; it was instead manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred.”

Bryan Fair, the SPLC’s interim CEO, defended the organization’s actions, explaining that the payments were made to gather intelligence on violent extremist groups and that the information was often shared with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. Fair stated, “We are outraged by the false allegations levied against SPLC,” and vowed to “vigorously defend ourselves, our staff, and our work.”

The SPLC, founded in 1971 by Alabama lawyer Morris Dees, has a long history of monitoring hate groups and advocating for civil rights. However, the organization has faced criticism in recent years, with some accusing it of being a partisan entity. The FBI severed ties with the SPLC in October 2025, citing concerns about its operations.

The charges against the SPLC have sparked debate about the methods used by non-profits in their investigative work.

The DoJ’s investigation is ongoing, and while only the organization has been charged so far, individuals may also face charges. The SPLC has pledged to continue its work monitoring hate groups and defending civil rights.
