President Trump Announces Ceasefire Extension With Iran

President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday (April 21), pausing further US military action as both sides face growing tension and an uncertain path toward a long-term agreement. The announcement comes just hours before the fragile truce was set to expire and as US and Iranian delegations prepared for potential negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan.

In a Truth Social post, President Trump cited Iran’s “seriously fractured” government, stating that Iranian officials requested the extension. He wrote that the United States would “hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”

The ceasefire extension follows escalations at sea, including the US seizure of an Iranian vessel and threats from both sides. President Trump warned that without a deal, the US military would target critical infrastructure in Iran. Iranian officials have rejected demands to halt uranium enrichment or ship nuclear material abroad, calling such conditions a “non-starter.”

The US has kept a naval blockade around Iran, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues at a trickle. Talks in Islamabad may continue for several days, but whether Iran will participate or a broader deal can be reached is uncertain. Despite threats and public skepticism, mediators hope that the talks could yield a temporary agreement to stabilize the truce and create a framework for further negotiations.
