Mountain Lion Kills Family’s Dogs in Southern California

A mountain lion attacked and killed two dogs belonging to a family in Yucaipa on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred between 7:50 and 8:20 a.m. at the Schultz family’s home, where the mountain lion jumped a fence and targeted the family’s 90-pound husky and 65-pound Anatolian shepherd. The attack was captured on the family’s security camera.

Laurie Schultz, the homeowner, shared the tragic news on social media, describing the attack as unprovoked. “This mountain lion, who we have on video, even came back and took the shepherd out and carried her away,” Schultz wrote.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is currently working with the family to assess the situation. According to the CDFW, mountain lion attacks on domestic dogs, even large breeds, are not uncommon. They recommend that residents take preventive measures, such as supervising pets outdoors and providing secure enclosures.

The CDFW offers safety tips through its Human-Wildlife Conflicts Toolkit. Schultz urged other Yucaipa residents to remain vigilant and warned them to keep their pets safe.
