At least three students sustained injuries during a wild brawl that escalated into a mass shooting at the University of Iowa Sunday (April 19) morning, police confirmed via NBC News.
The Iowa City Police Department responded to a report of a large fight on East College Street in the downtown area at approximately 1:46 a.m. local time. Responding officers said they heard gunfire at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, but video shared on social media appears to show a confrontation prior to the shooting that seemed to involve a large group of people, with several individuals punching and kicking others while bystanders told them to stop. It’s unclear when gunfire started, though other video shared online shows a large group fleeing the scene.
At least four people suffered gunshot wounds, first responders confirmed in scanner traffic recordings shared by Broadcastify. Multiple victims were transported to local hospitals and treated from injuries sustained during the incident, however, authorities didn’t confirm the specific number of injuries.
No arrests had been made at the time of publication Sunday morning. University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed that three students were injured and urged the campus community to avoid the area amid the ongoing investigation in a statement shared on the college’s website.
“While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,” Wilson said. “I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now.”
