Kathy Ruemmler, a top lawyer for Goldman Sachs, will resign after the latest tranche of files connected with late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein included her emails signed with “xoxo” notes just days prior to his death, the New York Post reports.
Ruemmler reportedly made the decision to resign herself, which blindsided Goldman Sachs, however, won’t be leaving her role until June 30.
“I made the determination that the media attention on me, relating to my prior work as a defense attorney, was becoming a distraction,” Ruemmler said in a statement obtained by the New York Post.
The attorney reportedly called up Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon to reveal her decision after the “xoxo” email wishing Epstein a happy birthday, which included a crude joke from the convicted pedophile about naming his genitals, had surfaced, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
“After that, Kathy just said that’s it, she was sick of it all after the media misrepresented that Kathy was discussing Epstein’s penis,” the source said.
Solomon had continued to stand by Ruemmler to the frustration of several senior Goldman Sachs executives and alumni, according to reports.
“Throughout her tenure, Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm,” Solomon said in a statement obtained by the New York Post.
Ruemmler reportedly received lavish gifts from Epstein, including a $9,400 Hermes handbag and a spa trip at the Four Seasons in Washington, D.C., according to files released by the Justice Department in January.
“Ms. Ruemmler has done nothing wrong and has nothing to hide. Nothing in the record suggests otherwise,” said Jennifer Connelly, a spokesperson for Ruemmler, via the New York Post. “She will enjoy a wealthy retirement, though probably fewer cocktail parties and golf outings,” said one Wall Street insider. “She has many secrets to keep.”
