A top Russian military official was shot several times and wounded at an apartment in Moscow Friday (February 6) that followed a series of incidents the Kremlin has blamed on Ukraine, the New York Post reports.
Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, 64, was shot by an unidentified assailant and hospitalized, Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko confirmed in a statement. Petrenko didn’t say who was responsible for the shooting, though it took place after Russian authorities blamed Ukraine for several assassinations that have taken place since the Kremlin launched its invasion nearly four years ago.
Kyiv officials have claimed responsibility for some of the shootings, but hadn’t commented on the incident involving Akeseyev. The latest incident took place one day after Russian, Ukrainian and American negotiators concluded two days of negotiations on a peace deal in Abu Dhabi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was reportedly informed about the attack on Alekseyev, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pesckov, who said law enforcement agencies needed to increase protection on senior military officers amid the conflict with Ukraine. A car bomb killed Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarv, the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff in September, while Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff, was killed by an explosive device placed in his parked car in April.
Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces and his assistant were killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment building in December 2024, with Ukraine’s security service claiming responsibility. Alekseyev received the Hero of Russia medal for his role in the Kremlin’s military campaign in Syria and was filmed speaking to mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin when his Wagner Group seized the military headquarters of Rostov-on-Don in June 2023.
