House Passes Funding Bill To Reopen Government

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a spending package to end the partial government shutdown after three days on Tuesday (February 3), CNN reports.

The bill is expected to quickly be sent to and signed by President Donald Trump who, along with GOP leaders, pushed hard for Republican lawmakers to fall in line despite private gripes about the bill in an effort to avoid another lengthy shutdown just months removed from one that set a record for the longest in American history at 43 days. Trump shared a post on his Truth Social account confirming he would sign it into law “immediately.”

“I am working hard with Speaker Johnson to get the current funding deal, which passed in the Senate last week, through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into Law, IMMEDIATELY! We need to get the Government open, and I hope all Republicans and Democrats will join me in supporting this Bill, and send it to my desk WITHOUT DELAY. There can be NO CHANGES at this time. We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!” Trump said.

The measure now faces a 10-day window for Congress to negotiate with the Department of Homeland Security funding set to expire on February 13. Senate Democrats held a conference call on January 25 to discuss their strategy to block a Department of Homeland Security funding bill if it didn’t include changes on how immigration enforcement operations were imposed following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, 37, a registered nurse who worked in the ICU at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis on Saturday, less than a month after Renee Good was fatally shot in the same city by an ICE officer.
