LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles County prosecutors opted against immediately filing any criminal charges against actor Kiefer Sutherland stemming from his recent arrest in Hollywood, asking police instead Monday to conduct additional investigation into the matter, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Sutherland, 59, was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 12 after police responded to a call of a possible assault near Fairfax Avenue and Sunset Boulevard.
Police arrested Sutherland, best known for his work on the drama “24” and films including “Flatliners” and “Stand By Me,” after being told he entered a ride-hailing vehicle and assaulted the driver while also making criminal threats. He was booked on suspicion of criminal threats. No injuries were reported.
According to county jail records, Sutherland’s bail was set at $50,000. He posted bond and was released at 11:30 a.m. the same day.
TMZ reported that Sutherland called for an Uber Black to take him home after dinner with a friend. The actor told police he repeatedly ordered the driver to pull over and let him out while en route, to no avail, according to the report.
The driver said Sutherland grabbed him and threatened to kill him if he didn’t stop the car, TMZ reported, adding that the driver was not a native English speaker and a language barrier might have led to the altercation.
Sutherland, son of the late actor Donald Sutherland, won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his portrayal of Jack Bauer in the Fox action series “24,” which ran for about a decade. His film credits include “The Lost Boys,” “Young Guns,” “A Few Good Men” and “A Time to Kill.”
