Newly released federal files tied to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein include personal emails exchanged more than 20 years ago between Casey Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press.
The emails, dated March and April 2003, were made public Friday as part of a massive document release by the U.S. Department of Justice under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on five federal counts related to sex trafficking and the sexual abuse of minors.
Wasserman is now the chairman of LA28, which is overseeing Los Angeles’ preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games. The documents show he exchanged flirtatious and sexually suggestive messages with Maxwell, Epstein’s former romantic partner, more than a decade before her conviction.
According to the documents, the messages include references to meeting in person, sexual innuendo, and travel discussions. The exchanges occurred during a period when federal prosecutors later established that Maxwell and Epstein were engaged in a sex-trafficking scheme involving minors in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Other records released Friday show Wasserman and his then-wife flew on Epstein’s private jet in 2002 with Maxwell, Epstein, former President Bill Clinton, actor Kevin Spacey, and others on a trip to Africa focused on HIV-related issues. That trip was previously reported in a 2003 Vanity Fair article.
Epstein died by suicide in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Prosecutors alleged he abused dozens of underage girls at multiple properties and paid victims to recruit other minors.
The Justice Department says the latest disclosure includes more than three million pages of documents, along with thousands of videos and images. Wasserman’s representatives did not immediately respond to the L.A. Times’ request for comment Friday.
Wasserman remains the public face of Los Angeles’ Olympic bid and is expected to participate in upcoming international Olympic events ahead of the 2028 Games.
