At least six people, including a 2-year-old, were killed after a small Mexican navy plane crashed while on a medical mission near Galveston, Texas, on Monday (December 22), officials confirmed via CBS News.
The crash took place at around 3:17 p.m. local time near the base of a causeway along the Texas coast near Galveston. Two people were hospitalized, though there wasn’t an immediate word on their condition.
One passenger, a 27-year-old, was reportedly uninjured in the crash, however, it was unclear whether that person had been among the two reported to be hospitalized, according to the Coast Guard. One person who was initially reported to be missing was confirmed to have been found dead on Tuesday (December 23), the Mexican Navy confirmed.
The plane was a twin turboprop Beech King Air 350i, which was carrying eight people — four Mexican Navy officers and four civilians — at the time of the crash. All four of the Mexican Navy officials, one 2-year-old and the child’s doctor were identified as the confirmed victims killed in the crash.
The plane was on a medical mission to transport the child to Shriners Children’s hospital in Galveston in coordination with the nonprofit Michou and Mau Foundation, which specializes in emergency transports of children with life-threatening burns.
“We express our deepest solidarity with the families in light of these events. We share their grief with respect and compassion, honoring their memory and reaffirming our commitment to providing humane, sensitive, and dignified care to children with burns,” the Michou and Mau Foundation said in a statement shared on social media translated from Spanish.
