Covina Widow’s Dog Killed in Thanksgiving Burglary

In Covina, a 76-year-old widow named Monica Lopez returned home late on Thanksgiving night to find her house ransacked and her beloved dog, Rocky, dead. The burglars broke into her home, stealing jewelry, mementos, and cash she had saved for her mortgage payment. Lopez, who has lived in her Covina home for 30 years, found a side gate open and a window shattered, indicating the point of entry for the intruders.

The burglary occurred while Lopez was celebrating the holiday with her family. Upon returning, she discovered the devastation, including the loss of her dog, Rocky, who had been her companion since her husband’s death. According to ABC7 Chicago, Rocky was found a few streets away with severe head trauma, and the family believes he was either hit by a car or killed while trying to protect the home.

The incident has left Lopez and her family devastated, with her son expressing disbelief at the heartlessness of the crime. “Such, you know, cold-hearted people to do that to someone and an animal and someone elderly,” he said. KTLA reports that detectives are currently reviewing evidence, including fingerprints, to identify a suspect. The family has also set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of the stolen items and repairs to the home.

The burglary has raised concerns about safety in the area, with Lopez’s family noting previous suspicious activities around their home. Despite the financial loss, Lopez says the most painful part is losing Rocky, her loyal protector. The family hopes for justice and the capture of those responsible for the crime.
