The family of Diego Alfonso Rios, a 30-year-old man from Rancho Cucamonga, is seeking answers after he died following a police encounter in Claremont on Friday.
According to the Claremont Police Department, the incident began when they received calls about a man acting erratically near Claremont Boulevard and Andrew Drive. Before officers arrived, the man, identified as Rios, drove away. Officers later located his vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.
During the stop, police believed Rios was driving under the influence and asked him to step out of the vehicle. A use-of-force incident occurred, but officials have not detailed the events leading to this encounter. Rios became unresponsive during the struggle, and officers provided aid until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived. He was then taken to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Rios’ family is devastated by his death and has launched a GoFundMe page to cover burial expenses and a second private autopsy. They are considering legal action and seeking more information about the incident. The family described Rios as a beloved son, brother, and friend. They have asked anyone with information to contact them directly or reach out to the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
