Ary Gisell Raya, 23, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the murder of two Australian brothers and their American friend during a surfing trip in Baja California. The victims, Callum Robinson, 33, his brother Jake, 30, and their friend Jack Rhoad, 30, were on a camping and surfing trip in April 2024 when they were killed.
The incident occurred in the remote Punta San Jose area, about 20 miles south of Ensenada. On April 27, the three men met Raya, who noted their valuables and later urged her boyfriend and two other men to rob them, according to the Mexican attorney general’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in Crimes Against Life. The robbers, identified as Jesús “El Kekas” Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús, reportedly arrived at the scene between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. to steal the tires from the surfers’ vehicle. When the surfers attempted to intervene, they were shot.
The bodies of the victims were discovered on May 2 in a well located four miles from their campsite. The well was difficult to access, and the opening had been covered with boards. A massive search effort, involving local authorities, the Mexican military, and the FBI, led to the discovery. The men had been reported missing by their families after failing to check into an Airbnb in Rosarito Beach.
Raya pleaded guilty to robbery and vehicle theft with violence and waived her right to a trial. She was also ordered to pay 54,000 pesos (approximately $3,000) in restitution. The other suspects remain in custody awaiting trial. Locals noted the case was resolved more swiftly than typical cases involving Mexican nationals.
