A grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers on a walking trail in Bella Coola, British Columbia, leaving two people critically injured and injuring nine others on Thursday (November 20). The attack occurred near Highway 20, and the bear remains on the loose. Emergency Health Services spokesperson Brian Twaites confirmed that two individuals suffered critical injuries, while two others sustained serious injuries. The remaining victims received treatment at the scene.
The incident involved students and teachers from Acwsalcta School, an independent school run by the Nuxalk First Nation.The attack took place in an area known as 4 Mile, approximately 435 miles northwest of Vancouver. The Nuxalk Nation has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid the highway, as police and conservation officers are actively searching for the bear.
The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are on the scene, prioritizing public safety. The Nuxalk Nation has summoned additional conservation officers and urged the community to remain indoors. Acwsalcta School announced it would be closed on Friday, with counseling services available for those affected.
