Former Vice President Dick Cheney‘s funeral, scheduled for Thursday (November 20) at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., will be attended by a host of past presidents and political figures, but notably absent will be President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
The exclusion of Trump and Vance highlights ongoing tensions within the Republican Party. Cheney, once a staunch conservative supporter of Trump, became a vocal critic following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. His daughter, Liz Cheney, played a key role in the congressional investigation into the Trump’s involvement in the Capitol riot, further straining ties with Trump and his supporters in the Republican Party.
Cheney, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 84, will receive full military honors at the service. The funeral will be attended by more than 1,000 guests, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Joe Biden, as well as former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle. Supreme Court Justices John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, and Elena Kagan are also expected to attend, alongside congressional leaders such as Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell.
The funeral will feature speeches from former President Bush, Liz Cheney, and several of Cheney’s grandchildren. Cheney, who served as Vice President under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, was a central figure in the U.S. response to the September 11 attacks and the subsequent War on Terror. Despite his controversial legacy, the service is expected to be a moment of bipartisan respect, reflecting Cheney’s significant impact on American politics.
