How Your Phone, Computer May Increase Risk Of Cancer, Obesity Revealed

Looking at your phone or laptop can reportedly led to serious health issues, according to several studies.

The blue light emitted from screens has already been credited for sleeping issues, disrupting the circadian rhythm during the human body’s natural 24-hour cycle that controls when a person feels awake or sleepy by producing hormones like melatonin, cortisol and multiple other bodily functions, and the artificial light is now being linked to numerous other issues beyond eye strain. Poor sleep at night from disrupted circadian rhythms can also lead to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes as they regulate how the body responds to insulin and produces glucose, according to a recent study from the National Library of Medicine.

Another study shared by the National Library of Medicine shows that late night exposure to blue light can lead to increased weight gain and obesity, another risk factor for diabetes as the body’s natural rhythm controls daily fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate. Disrupting the “body clock” can result in cardiovascular issues like high blood pressure, increased heart rate, heart failure and a higher risk of heart disease.

A study published by the Environmental Health Perspectives showed that individuals who slept with screen lights also had a 1.5 times higher risk for developing breast cancer and were twice as likely to develop prostate cancer. Breast cancer in particular was more likely due to a lack of melatonin, which is believed to have anticancer properties and is suppressed by blue light from screens.

Additionally, researchers at Harvard University found that 6.5 hours of blue light exposure resulted in circadian rhythms doubling by comparison to those with green light exposure.
