Hundreds Of Federalized National Guard Members To Leave Portland, Chicago

The 200 federalized California National Guard members sent to Portland, Oregon, and the 200 federalized Texas National Guard members sent to Chicago, Illinois, due to ongoing legal challenges are set to return to their home states, two U.S. officials confirmed to ABC News on Saturday (November 15).

U.S. Northern Command hinted that the federalized troops would be ending their mission in the two cities in a post shared on X late Friday (November 14) night, which stated, “in the coming days, the Department will be shifting and/or rightsizing our Title 10 footprint in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to ensure a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city,” but didn’t provide additional details. National Guard members from Texas and California were activated on federal orders by President Donald Trump and placed on an active duty Title 10 status in early October, but never carried out operations due to several rulings that placed a hold on their deployment.

California is set to maintain a ready force of 100 National Guard members, while Texas will keep a force of 200 who volunteered to take part in the mission, one of the officials told ABC News. The 200 National Guard members previously federalized by Trump to serve in Chicago will stay on active duty, according to the official.

There will, however, be a change among the 200 federalized Oregon National Guard members, which are set to be reduced to 100 remaining on active duty, according to the source.
