Murder Charges Filed After Boy, 5, Vanished Steps From His Home

Idaho prosecutors have filed murder charges in the case of Michael Vaughan, a 5-year-old who disappeared from his Fruitland neighborhood in July 2021. Payette County Prosecutor Michael Duke announced on Friday (October 31) that his office is pursuing charges against individuals involved in Vaughan’s disappearance and murder. However, he did not specify the number of suspects or their identities.

Stacey Wondra, a felon who lived near Vaughan, is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, and destruction of evidence. Wondra and his ex-wife, Sarah Wondra, were previously arrested on lesser charges related to the case. Sarah’s charges were later dropped, while Stacey served time in federal prison for an unrelated firearm offense.

Cadaver dogs alerted authorities to possible human remains in the Wondras’ backyard, but none were found. Fruitland Police Chief JD Huff suspects Michael was initially buried there and later moved.

Michael’s mother, Brandi Vaughan, expressed hope that the charges will lead to finding her son. “Michael deserves to be home with his family,” she stated.

The investigation continues as authorities aim to bring Michael’s remains home and seek justice for his family.
