In December, the United States will welcome its first all-electric hospital, UCI Health — Irvine, located in Irvine. This groundbreaking facility is set to open on December 10 and will feature a 144-bed capacity within a seven-story, 350,000-square-foot building. Situated next to the San Joaquin Marsh, the hospital aims to merge high technology with thoughtful design to promote healing and comfort.
The hospital is part of a $1.3 billion medical campus that includes a cancer center and ambulatory care building. It will serve residents of central, coastal, and south Orange County, offering specialties such as cancer care, cardiology, and neurosciences. The facility will operate without carbon fuels, relying entirely on electricity generated onsite or procured from sustainable sources. Joe Brothman, director of UCI Health General Services, emphasized the commitment to sustainability, stating, “The operation of this campus will have no emissions.”
The hospital will feature renewable solar park structures and rainwater collection systems, along with energy-efficient equipment. According to Chad Lefteris, president and CEO of UCI Health, this facility represents a significant step towards future-proofing healthcare, setting a standard for future hospitals. The hospital’s construction aligns with the University of California’s goal of decarbonizing its campuses by 2045.
