Senators Focus on Palisades Fire, Overlook Eaton Blaze

U.S. Senators Rick Scott of Florida and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin have intensified their investigation into the January 7 firestorm that ravaged Los Angeles County, focusing primarily on the Palisades fire. This blaze started in Pacific Palisades and spread to Malibu, causing significant destruction. The senators sent a letter to Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, requesting extensive records related to the city’s fire department staffing, wildfire preparations, and water supply.

The Palisades fire investigation seeks to understand issues such as an empty reservoir and the failure to fully extinguish a previous fire, which led to the Palisades blaze.

In contrast, the Eaton fire, which affected Altadena and Pasadena, received minimal attention in the investigation. The Eaton fire faced challenges like delayed evacuation alerts and allegations that Southern California Edison equipment sparked the fire.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the senators’ letter emphasized the Palisades fire, which resulted in 12 deaths, while the Eaton fire claimed 19 lives, mostly in Altadena. The senators, who are part of the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, opened the probe after meeting with reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who lost a home in the Palisades fire.

The senators have requested records by November 3, 2025, to aid in assessing Los Angeles’ emergency response and future mitigation efforts. However, some local officials and residents have criticized the investigation for focusing on wealthier areas while overlooking the challenges faced by working-class communities affected by the Eaton fire.

Quiver Quantitative reports that the investigation also aims to examine redevelopment efforts in fire-affected areas and whether foreign companies are exploiting the recovery process. The senators’ focus on the Palisades fire has sparked debate over the equitable treatment of communities impacted by the fires.
