Vance: ‘We’re Headed To A Shutdown’

Vice President JD Vance told reporters that he thinks “we’re headed to a shutdown” after top Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement during their meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday (September 29).

“I think we’re headed to a shutdown because the Democrats won’t do the right thing,” Vance said via CNBC with less than two days before a shutdown will take place in the absence of a funding deal.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who represented the Democrats in the meeting, also confirmed that the two sides were far apart on a potential deal.

“We have very large differences,” said Schumer, who said he believes that Trump heard the Democrats’ objections “for the first time,” and claimed the meeting was at least partially constructive.

“It’s up to the Republicans whether they want a shutdown or not,” he added.

Republican lawmakers, who hold slim majorities in both the House of Representatives and Senate one year into Trump’s second term, want to pass a stopgap bill to maintain federal funding through late November, while Democrats demand that the continuing resolution include funding and protection for several key measures, notably an extension of enhanced Obamacare tax credits set to expire at the end of 2025.
