Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has endorsed former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the 2026 California governor’s race. Bass announced her support for Villaraigosa at a press conference on Tuesday, highlighting their shared history and commitment to social justice. “Antonio and I have known and worked together our entire adult life,” Bass said in a statement, emphasizing Villaraigosa’s impact on both Los Angeles and the state of California.
Villaraigosa expressed gratitude for Bass’ endorsement, describing her as “a fierce advocate for working families, children, seniors, and underserved communities.” The race to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom has attracted a diverse field of candidates, including former Rep. Katie Porter, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, and former state legislative leader Toni Atkins.
Despite Bass’ endorsement, it’s uncertain how much influence it will have on the governor’s race, as her favorability ratings have fluctuated since taking office in 2022. However, Villaraigosa remains a prominent figure in California politics, having served as Los Angeles’ mayor for eight years.
The endorsement event took place outside the Los Angeles Sentinel, a Black-owned newspaper, and was attended by several local leaders, including Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris Dawson and Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. The race is expected to remain competitive, with independent polling currently showing Porter and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco with a slight edge. The primary election is set for June 2026, with the general election following in November.
